PASTORS CORNER….

PASTORS CORNER….

The True Price of Freedom

There once was a man named George Thomas, pastor in a small New England town. One Easter Sunday morning he came to the Church carrying a rusty, bent, old bird cage, and set it by the pulpit. Eyebrows were raised and, as if in response, Pastor Thomas began to speak...  "I was walking through the town yesterday when I saw a young boy coming toward me swinging this bird cage. On the bottom of the cage were three little wild birds, shivering with cold and fright. I stopped the lad and asked, "What you got there, son?"  "Just some old birds," came the reply.  "What are you gonna do with them?" I asked.  "Take 'em home and have fun with 'em," he answered. "I'm gonna tease 'em and pull out their feathers to make 'em fight. I'm gonna have a real good time."  "But you'll get tired of those birds sooner or later. What will you do?"  "Oh, I got some cats," said the little boy. "They like birds. I'll take 'em to them."  The pastor was silent for a moment. "How much do you want for those birds, son?"  "Huh? Why, you don't want them birds, mister. They're just plain old field birds. They don't sing. They ain't even pretty!"  "How much?" the pastor asked again. The boy sized up the pastor as if he were crazy and said, "$10?"  The pastor reached in his pocket and took out a ten dollar bill. He placed it in the boy's hand. In a flash, the boy was gone. The pastor picked up the cage and gently carried it to the end of the alley where there was a tree and a grassy spot. Setting the cage down, he opened the door, and by softly tapping the bar persuaded the birds out, setting them free. Well, that explained the empty bird cage on the pulpit, and then the pastor began to tell this story.

One day Satan and Jesus were having a conversation. Satan had just come from the Garden of Eden, and he was gloating and boasting. "Yes, sir! I just caught the world full of people down there. Set them a trap, used bait I knew they couldn't resist. Got 'em all!"  "What are you going to do with them?" Jesus asked.  Satan replied, "Oh, I'm gonna have fun! I'm gonna teach them how to marry and divorce each other, how to hate and abuse each other, how to drink and smoke and curse. I'm gonna teach them how to invent guns and bombs and kill each other. I'm really gonna have fun!”  "And what will you do when you get done with them?" Jesus asked.  "Oh, I'll kill 'em," Satan glared proudly.

"How much do you want for them?” Jesus asked.

“Oh, you don't want those people,” said Satan. “They ain't no good. Why, you'll take them and they'll just hate you. They'll spit on you, curse you and kill you. You don't want those people!"  "How much?" Jesus asked again.  Satan looked at Jesus and sneered, "All your blood, tears and your life."  "Jesus said, "Done!" Then He paid the price.

The pastor picked up the cage and he walked away from the pulpit.

Christians must tell the world that we are free because Jesus paid the true price of our freedom. Happy 4th.

Peace,

Fr. Richard

DAILY PRAYER FOR PRIESTS

Dear Lord, we pray that the Blessed Mother wrap her mantle around your priests and through her intercession strengthen them for their ministry. We pray that Mary will guide your priests to follow her own words, “Do whatever He tells you” (Jn 2:5). May your priests have the heart of St. Joseph, Mary’s most chaste spouse. May the Blessed Mother’s own pierced heart inspire them to embrace

all who suffer at the foot of the cross. May your priests be holy, filled with the fire of your love seeking nothing but your greater glory and the salvation of souls. Amen.

Saint John Vianney, pray for us.

The Year of the Priesthood is being celebrated worldwide until June 19, 2010.

EXPOSITION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT takes place each Friday after 8AM Mass until 6PM when we pray Evening Prayer with Benediction.

RESPECT FOR LIFE – A REFLECTION

"When our souls are filled with guilt, He offers us forgiveness. When life draws to a close, He assures us of a heavenly home. He promises never to fail or forsake us. When we have made mistakes, He tells us it’s never too late to start over. Many crosses can be added to our life’s journey, but Jesus has promised, ‘Cast all your cares on me, for I care for you’ (1 Peter 5:7)." Rev. Homer Larson.

SAINT OF THE WEEK

June 30: First Martyrs of the Church of Rome

The people we honor today had one thing in common: they gave up their lives for Christ. They were martyred because they were followers of the Lord Jesus. By the year 64, Emperor Nero's human rights violations had reached proportions beyond description. When a fire broke out in Rome on July 16, it was commonly believed that the emperor himself was responsible. As two-thirds of Rome lay in ruin, resentment grew. Nero became fearful. He needed a scapegoat and blamed the fire on the Christians.

Tacitus, a well-known historian, recorded that the Christians suffered cruel deaths. Some were fed to wild beasts. Others were tied to posts and became human torches that lit the Roman streets. The exact number of heroes is not known, but their gift of witness and their lives made a lasting impact on the people. Nero's was the first persecution by a Roman emperor, but not the last. And the more the Church was persecuted, the more it grew. The martyrs had paid the price so that all who would come after them could have the opportunity to embrace the faith.

Reflection: In our prayer today, we offer thanks to the Father for the martyrs of Rome for they have paid the price so that all who come after them would have the opportunity to embrace the faith.

A PRAYER FOR OUR NATION ON

 JULY 4th AND EVERYDAY.

GRACIOUS AND LOVING God, we come to you in humble prayer for the United States of America.

Bless our President. Give him wisdom and strength to serve the American people and lead our country in ways that are pleasing to you.

Bless our Congress. Instill in them knowledge and understanding to enact laws that protect the sanctity of life – from the unborn to the elderly; and promote the good of all people.

Bless the people of the United States. Make us aware of our responsibility as citizens to uphold the principles of life, liberty, justice, and equality.

Send your Holy Spirit upon our beloved country. Make us people of faith in times of uncertainty. Make us people of hope in times of trouble. Make us people of compassion with those who are less fortunate. Make us people of peace in our homes, our communities, our country, and our world.

We ask this through Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Savior. Amen.
