Blast from the Past(or)

Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today Jesus enters the Synagogue in Capernaum.  How well this coincides with the commencement of Catholic Schools' Week! As we gather around the Altar to celebrate the Sacred Mysteries with the Shepherd of this local Church of Paterson, the presence of Bishop Serratelli and the celebration of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School gives voice to the reality that Jesus 'taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes.' Catholic Schools' Week in general, and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School in particular, comprise a resolute objection to a culture adamantly suspicious of authority and even less enamored with the notion of truth. The presence, work and legacy of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School stands in direct oppostion to the politically correct-mandated Thankfully, for over 120 years, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School has been uncompromising in the  formation of young people in Christian leadership and virtue.
How do we fill the leadership vacuum in our culture? At least for now, our government still thankfully 'recognizes' our inalienable right to educate our children according to our convictions of Faith and truth. As a result, we may encourage our children in the Catholic Schools' Week theme of Faith, Academics and Service. Along with Jesus' entry into the Synagogue, we are reminded emphatically that true authority is connected with the truth. In a very large and real (and grave) sense, Jesus' teaching in the Synagogue and the work of our principal and teachers are pursuits of the same thing: the proclamation of the Word made flesh, experienced through Truth and authority. Catholic Schools' Week serves as a great encouragement to Catholic Christians, namely, in the recognition that true leadership can never come from politics but only from values. Our celebration today is part of the great 'Catholic Moment,' of the renewal, and return, of true education, which is to form society from faith and values.

God Bless You!

READINGS FOR THE FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

First Reading: Job 7:1-4, 6-7

In this passage, Job laments the drudgery and pain all people sometimes experience in life. He talks of troubled days and restless nights. But he does mention that the days move along swiftly, which can remind us that our time here on earth is quite limited and should be well spent.

Second Reading: I Corinthians 9:16-19, 22-23

Paul explains to the Corinthians that he has no choice, but must preach the gospel. He tells of making himself all things to all people, in order to save some of them. He reminds them that he does this willingly, in the hope of sharing in the blessings of the gospel.

Gospel: Mark 1:29-39

Jesus cured Simon and Andrew’s mother of a fever, then others with illnesses or demons came to see him. He cured those who were ill, and cast out the demons of the others. Then he went off and prayed alone until his followers sought him out. Jesus and his disciples then moved on to other villages to proclaim the good news.

HAVE YOU BEGUN TO READ THE BIBLE ONLY TO STOP IN DISINTEREST?

If you have ever wanted to read the Bible, but stopped in frustration or confusion, then the A Quick Journey Through the Bible study is for you. This study makes reading the bible not only easy, but even exciting. Often the problem with reading the bible is that it was not written as a linear story. So, when people start to read it, they quickly lose the narrative thread. Not any more, thanks to A Quick Journey Through The Bible.

In this Study, you will learn the major people, places, events and themes of the Bible, getting the “big picture” of salvation history. Perhaps for the first time in your life, you will understand the overview of the Bible story.

This then makes your Bible reading and even the Sunday Mass readings come alive like never before .A Quick Journey Through The Bible study is being offered right here at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church for 8 Tuesdays from February 7th 2012 through March 27th 2012,7:30-9:00PM.

Current enrollment is 80 people.

Feel free to join. To learn more, please contact Deirdre Nemeth at 973-334-1017 or olmcfaithformation@msn.com

BAPTISM PREPARATION

When the news of a pregnancy is announced there is much to do in preparation. The Scriptures tells us that Mary went to visit her cousin Elizabeth to help her prepare for the arrival of a new baby. Those who are expecting a child can also prepare for the celebration of baptism during the time of pregnancy. The occasion of the baptism of a new child is one which should be filled with joy and the necessary preparations add to that joy .Please contact Sister Nadine a 551-655-4943 so that

Preparations can be made for the day of baptism at least 6 weeks before the date you have in mind. She will guide you through the preparations and assist you with your questions and concerns. All parents are asked to do so even if they have had an older child baptized.

Feb. 2nd: World Day for Consecrated Life

First of all, congratulations to the parents and grandparents  who have had the courage to support their sons and daughter’s/grandson’s or granddaughter’s call to consecrate their lives to the Lord as women and men religious in service to the Church, the People of God.  Pope Paul VI aptly describes the significance of religious life for the Church when he says in Evangelica Testificatio, #3,  that religious life presents the church “with [a] privileged witness of a constant seeking for God, of an undivided love for Christ alone, and of an absolute dedication to the growth of His kingdom.  Without this concrete sign there would be a danger that the charity which animates the entire church would grow cold, that the salvific paradox of the Gospel would be blunted, and that the ‘salt’ of faith would lose its savor in a world undergoing secularization.”  Second of all, congratulations and prayers for those who are embracing or have embraced the gift of a religious vocation.  Sister Dorothy Ann Dirkx, SSM
